"Sandra Contreras's paintings weave between the exterior and the interior. Exteriority in her work is born from the relationship between sight and travelling. The conjunction of interior and exterior is the polyptychon as a narrative resource in her works."

Jose Luis Barrios, 1999

From the material to the fantastic order

This project is a painting exhibition based on the obsession for dreaming and flying.
My first idea to do "flying-landscapes" was based on my interest about a myth describing the roles of creation of the world. I could transform reality in my paintings by showing what could happen when gravitational force was removed. Very heavy objects could fly at the same level as the clouds. Nevertheless at and moment the object could fall.
The paintings were constructed following in three different spaces: the sky, the earth, and the water; in the same spaces where punishments take place… I thought about of a prohibition of playing and dreaming.

Dreams or perceptions ?

This painting project is based on the obsession of an old woman to fly; her vision seems to be the world of a small girl.

I wanted to describe the world which belonged to my grandmother. It began with the motivation in doing portraits. These portraits evolved into paintings in which I showed a particular world or perception dealing with emotions, illusions and symbols.
The speed of our daily lives is influenced by the presence of new media, which often doesn't tolerate slower rhythms. That is one reason I chose painting for this theme, an "old media" that can still be contemporary.
